All the below programs are free.

OpenOffice.org	An excelent free program similar to Microsoft Office.
Mozilla Firefox	An excelent web browser. Use instead of Internet Explorer.
The GIMP	Photo editor for enhancing, sizing, and effects on images. Also does painting.
Notepad++	Text editor for writing code with syntax highlighting. Multilingual support: HTML, CSS, Java, Perl, Python, SQL, and many others.
Winamp**	Multimedia player, for listening to music and online radio. Also plays video files.
